Dave Spencer

I am passionate about helping people, organisations and communities develop to achieve their ambitions and live more fulfilling lives. I have a keen interest in organisational cultures, complex systems and the many influences on behaviour that extend beyond strategy, policy and process. This is a consistent thread throughout my working life.

I served as a police officer for 30 years up to 2019 in a wide variety of roles from local policing to national policy development. This included 2 years at the Association of Chief Police Officers and short secondments to HM Inspectorate of Constabularies. I concluded my police career at the College of Policing where I developed and led a programme of peer reviews of police forces that considered the wider behaviour and cultural aspects of how a force delivered its policing services as well as the more tangible written strategies and policies.

In the past four years, I have pursued a variety of different work opportunities, all aligned to the common thread of helping others. Examples include:

• Supporting people from underrepresented groups join the police service through coaching and mock assessment centres.
• Executive coaching of senior people to support their personal development, overcome challenges and prepare for interviews and assessment centres.
• Create and deliver leadership development programmes for professionals primarily within the public sector.
• 1-2-1 and Team coaching with senior NHS professionals.
• Support local community safety partnerships develop long term collaborative problem solving approaches with other partners, communities and local organisations.
• Supporting the construction industry understand the wants and needs of local communities affected by rail construction improvement projects and assist them to deliver social value outcomes that is relevant to, and desired by communities.

I hold a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) and a Post Graduate Certificate (Level 7) in Coaching. The dissertation research for my MBA was on the cultural diagnosis and transformation of a UK police force.

I am a Member of the Association for Coaching and the Chartered Management Institute.
