Unprecedented Challenges

Police forces across the UK are facing public confidence, people and service delivery challenges on an unprecedented scale, including

  • Leadership and supervision
  • Tens of thousands of new officers and staff needing induction and development
  • Thousands of recruits still needed
  • Retention difficulties with existing officers and staff choosing to leave the service early
  • Challenging budgets

A New Way to Transform

Police forces across the UK face a recruitment and retention challenge on an unprecedented scale.

Following the government’s uplift programme over the last three years in England and Wales many more officers and staff are urgently needed and those recruits need to be genuinely representative of the diverse communities the police serve.

In addition, more and more police officers and staff are choosing to leave the service early to pursue other careers. The need to invest in and develop talent within the service has never been more crucial.

Practice to Progress can support forces in areas of workforce challenges:

  • Developing your talent pool
  • Enhancing recruitment and development, including of under-represented groups
  • Improving skills development and promotion success
  • Supporting strong values-based professional standards
  • Improving diversity at all levels

Our team of experienced former police officers and staff, from every rank and many roles, can work with your force to build a bespoke programme of support to help you achieve your goals.

We work with each force to replicate local recruitment, selection and promotion processes, providing officers and staff of all ranks and roles with the opportunity to practice promotion and selection processes and assessments either face-to-face or via an easy-to-use online portal.

We have successful packages available to support supervision and leadership development.

We work with forces across the UK to support the recruitment and progression of candidates, including those from underrepresented groups, with a mix of 1-to-1 sessions and group workshops, providing real-time support from experienced practitioners and associates using the police Competency Values Framework (CVF).

We can also train your Force associates to develop their skills and gain confidence in the assessment process whilst challenging unconscious bias, ensuring they select the very best people to take your organisation forward, in a fair and professional manner.

We are very experienced in dealing with sensitive and difficult professional standards, complaints and discipline cases.

Positive Action Workshops

The Evaluation

During November and December 2020, P2P was commissioned to design and deliver a series of positive action workshops aimed at better preparing minority ethnic and female direct entry detective constable candidates for the new College of Policing online assessment.

An independent study was commissioned by a UK force, evaluated the impact of the workshops on assessment outcomes. The aim of the research was to investigate whether a positive action workshop increases the likelihood of scheduling, attending, completing and successfully passing the College of Policing’s new online assessment.

The evaluation showed that being offered a ‘positive action workshop’ with P2P significantly increased the number of minority ethnic and female candidates who pass the College of Policing online assessment.

The summary of the evaluation is now available to download and demonstrates the significant difference P2P can make in support of the workforce challenges police forces currently face with recruitment and retention.
