Matt Bonner

I completed my service with the Metropolitan Police Service in 2021 as a Detective Superintendent where for the last four years, I had the privilege of leading the Criminal Investigation following the tragic events at Grenfell Tower in 2017 as the Senior Investigating Officer (SIO).

In the last couple of years, I have been actively involved in supporting the next generation of officers in whatever way I can.

I am an associate trainer with the College of Policing delivering senior detective training nationally and have supported numerous individuals on their journey into policing through my work with P2P. My passion to improve the standards of investigations, has also resulted in me working in the development and delivery of case investigation software for use by investigators working on complex cases.

I am an accredited (PIP 3) SIO and (PIP 4) Strategic Investigator. I consider myself a ‘career detective’ and served on the MPS Homicide and Serious Crime command for ten years as an SIO. During that time, I led numerous high profile and other complex homicide investigations to successful conclusions. Prior to my service with the MPS, I served with Hertfordshire Constabulary where I led on the development and implementation of an innovative approach to offender management and then supported the Police Service of Northern Ireland to successfully introduce a similar approach to policing in N. Ireland.

I am passionate about supporting and encouraging officers on their own journey along the ‘Detective pathway’ and helping them to achieve whatever it is that they want from the experience. I have successfully mentored many staff, some of whom have chosen to go on to become SIO’s leading their own teams.

I take great pride in seeing colleagues fulfil their potential whatever it is they choose to do and am fortunate to have the opportunity with Practice to Progress to continue to ‘give something back’.
