I joined Derbyshire Fire & Rescue in 1992 as a firefighter, having previously working for British Rail after leaving school with four ‘O’ Levels. I started progressing through the ranks after about four years and reached Area Manager in 2015. In 2017 I got promoted as Assistant Chief Fire Officer in South Yorkshire FRS, a year later becoming Deputy Chief and in January 2020 taking up the position of Chief Fire Officer.
Throughout my career I have worked across most references. I am a fully qualified Business Fire Safety officer, Breathing Apparatus Instructor and Critical Incident Debriefer. I’ve worked in Prevention and Inclusion, Protection, Response, Training and strategic planning
Prior to my retirement in May 2022 I had been the Equality Diversity and Inclusion lead for the National Fire Chiefs Council and I have been on the Executive Committee for Women in the Fire Service UK for many years.
I am passionate about creating inclusive workplaces and people being empowered to come to work as their whole self. I genuinely believe that diverse workforces are stronger and better placed to serve their communities. I have coached and mentored many people in the UKFRS and P2P gives me the opportunity to continue this in a more structured way.
My spare time is taken up with harassing my 17 year old daughter to study for her A levels, looking after my 2 year old great niece and walking my springer spaniel Charlie.
