Stephen Gowland

Associate

I was the 50th national President of Cilex (The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives),  served for ten years on the Cilex board and during that time was involved in restructuring the organisation and the recruitment of a new CEO.

I commenced my career as an apprentice and qualified as a lawyer whilst working full time.

I worked for various law firms and first gained experience in police matters when defending forces in civil claims. I ran my own successful high street law firm for twelve years before moving on to pursue other opportunities. I now work in-house and sit as a police misconduct judge for twenty-three police forces across England and Wales.

I also work as an associate with the College of Policing assisting them with recruitment and promotion for UK police forces and have assessed all levels up to and including senior PNAC.

I also gained experience in policing from another angle as a member of the joint audit committee for Durham Chief Constable and Durham police and crime commissioner.

I am interested in the regulation of various sectors and previously sat as a lay member on the regulatory panels of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW).

I am a non-executive member of the legal services board, the oversight regulator for legal services in England and Wales.
